The European Commission - Representation in Italy
EUROPEAN IDENTITY AND DIVERSITY
EU integration in the cross-media Public Service perspective
An initiative of Infocivica – the Turin Workgroup for the European Conference on
PUBLIC SERVICE MEDIA
IN THE SOCIETY OF INFORMATION AND KNOWLEDGE
6. The public broadcasting service in the history of Italy and tackling the transformations currently underway
Infocivica will facilitate a discussion between the representatives of the Turin Workgroup and some of the most renowned Italian experts in the historical and humanistic sciences, including Piero Craveri, Tullio De Mauro, Ernesto Galli della Loggia, Giuseppe De Rita, Aldo Grasso, Angelo Maria Petroni, Antonio Pilati, Stefano Rodotà and Vincenzo Zeno Zencovich.
The conference aims to retrace the history of the mission and the mandate of radio and television in the Italian society of the twentieth century, its role in the creation of a sensus communis in the national community, its contribution towards fostering the linguistic unity of the Italian people, and its role in protecting unprofitable industries with cultural value and in creating a modern entertainment industry (films, TV drama, cartoons and virtual animation).
Thanks to the Italian and foreign experts present the conference will seek to outline the elements that characterize the role of the public service in building an Italian society of knowledge and fostering the industrial and economic development of digital knowledge to be shared on the Net.
It will then examine the most appropriate modalities for copyright protection as regards the Italian cultural heritage - in all its local and regional geographical subdivisions and its material, artistic, musical and dramatic expressions - within the three-dimensional virtual world.
